Contribution of parasites to intra- and inter-site variation in shell morphology of a marine gastropod

چکیده
In gastropods, variation in shell morphology can be caused by the action of several biotic and abiotic factors. While much of this variation is seen in comparisons between different sites or populations, there is also substantial variation in shell morphology among individuals living side by side. We investigate the effect of trematode parasitism on both intraas well as inter-site variation in the morphology of the New Zealand whelk Cominella glandiformis. We found that both infection by the trematode Curtuteria australis and site of origin had significant effects on several morphometric dimensions of the snail shell, with some interactions between the two factors. On its own, infection by C. australis accounted for 20 to 60% of the variance in shell morphology, depending on the dimension measured. Infected snails also had smoother shells, with less prominent ridges, than their uninfected conspecifics. Other trematode species, infecting whelks at much lower prevalence, also had impacts on shell morphology, but not necessarily in the same direction as C. australis. Overall, parasitism may be an important factor in explaining intraand inter-site variation in snail phenotype, with potential repercussions for snail populations and their interactions with other community members.

Temporal Variation in Rocky Intertidal Gastropods of the Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf
Gastropod assemblages were investigated along intertidal rocky shore in the Qeshm Island in the northern Persian Gulf. Monthly sampling was undertaken from May 2007 to April 2008. Environmental factors were also measured in each site. A total of 28 gastropod taxa belonging to 15 families were identified and Cerithiidae was the most abundant family and Cerithium caeruleum was the most abundant...

Shell selection indices of the dominant hermit crab Clibanarius signatus Heller, 1861, in the Larak Island were studied from September 2011 to June 2012. Among 739 sampled specimens, 41 different gastropod shell types were selected as shelters based on their abundance and local availability. A significant positive correlation (P<0/01) was found between the dimensions of the hermit crab, Cli...
متن کاملAn analysis of genetic variation and divergence in Indian tropical polyvoltine silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) genotypes
The genetic variation and diversity among fifty-eight polyvoltine silkworm genotypes was estimated by using ten economic traits. The results revealed that the single shell weight showed higher genetic variation such as PCV% (17.20%), GCV% (12.93%), and heritability (56.5%) followed by single cocoon weight, shell ratio and matured larval weight. The D2 (Mahalonobis? distance) statistics reveal...

متن کاملVARIATION IN LEAF MORPHOLOGY OF PARROTIA PERSICA ALONG AN ELEVATIONAL GRADIENT IN EASTERN MAZANDARAN PROVINCE (N. IRAN)
In order to investigate the variation within and among populations of Parrotia persica C.A. Meyer based on leaf morphological traits, three populations were selected from Behshar area, in the east of Mazandaran Province. The populations selected along a transect in different altitudes of 182, 340, 540 meter above the sea level, respectively. In each population, 10 trees were selected and some l...
